Berbatov happy with United form despite duck

Dimitar Berbatov says he is happy with his form for new club Manchester United, despite failing to get on the scoresheet in the win over Bolton.

The Bulgarian is still searching for his first goal for United since his protracted move from Tottenham on transfer deadline day, but believes his performance was his best so far for the club.

"I really wanted to score a goal," Berbabtov told MUTV. "But the three points are the most important thing and we were the better team today. We scored two goals but missed four or five chances.

"I'm happy with how I'm playing, particularly after today.

"The game was good for me. I didn't take my chances so hopefully in the future I will score.

"I think today was a big improvement from myself and from the team. I'm working really hard to help the team and so I can develop a better understanding with everyone. I'm sure that will happen."

United chief Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with Berbatov's performance and feels he adds a lot more to United' game with his ability to hold the ball up front.

"You don't need to pass to him in space all the time. You can pass to him when he's marked - he's brilliant at that and he produced some great moments, as did a lot of the players. His touch was fantastic at times," he said.

Ronaldo nets the controversial penalty.

Man Utd 2 - 0 Bolton

Defending champions Manchester United gained their first Premier League home win of the season - and left near neighbours Bolton nursing a huge sense of injustice as they made their way back up the M61 after a 2-0 defeat.

WACKY BEAUTY TIPS THAT WORK

1. Powder Your Roots
If your hairline starts to look greasy, dig up a big, fluffy makeup brush, and dip it into a pot of loose powder. Tap it once on the back of your hand to remove the excess, then dust it over your roots. It mops up oil and blends into your strands, so no one will know you didn't shower.

2. Scent Strands with Perfume
Spray a light shot of fragrance into the bristles. Run it through strands from roots to ends and your hair will smell amazing throughout the day.

3. Cure Calluses with Vaseline
Slather on the petroleum jelly, and put on socks before bed to dissolve tough calluses overnight.

4. Spot-Treat Smudges
Dip a cotton swab in eye-makeup remover, and trace it along your lids to erase any slipups or goofs when there's no time to redo your whole look.

5. Fix a Flushed Face
If you turn red and stay that way after exercising (like seriously red for hours, even though you're healthy and hydrated), take an antihistamine like Benadryl when you leave the gym to reduce redness.

6. Soften Your Bod with Avocado
Take a ripe avocado, remove the pit and skin, and mash it up in a bowl. Slather it all over your body, let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse off. Your skin will be so soft — avocado is a natural moisturizer.

7. Super-Glue a Nail
Instead of tearing off your nail when it breaks, put a tiny dab of Super Glue over the split, and paint a generous layer of your favorite nailpolish shade over it. Go for an opaque option (like red, purple, or coral) to camouflage and seal the crack.

8. Use Makeup Remover on Stubborn Lipstick
Don't try to rub off red lipstick (which makes it smear across your mouth — not so sexy). Instead, take a cotton ball or tissue, dip it in makeup remover, and just dab to erase the dark stain fast.

9. Tame Brows with Eye Cream
Pat any kind of rich eye cream over brows to help keep them hydrated and banish those icky white specks that look like dandruff.

10. Buff with Baking Soda
If you find yourself streaking (not glowing) after applying self-tanner, put some baking soda on a loofah, and scrub away the stripes.

11. Brush on Hair Spray
For the final step of your blow-dry, spray hair spray onto your brush, and run it through strands from roots to tips. This way, your do isn't so plastered and stiff but still holds volume and shine.

12. Boost Body Lotion with Baby Oil
If you're craving shiny legs that aren't greasy, blend a drop of baby oil into your normal body lotion for extra luster.

13. Dab Essential Oil on a Hangnail
Put on apricot oil, the kind found in health-food stores, to protect cuticles from turning rough and raggedy.

14. Quell a Cold Sore with Cream
When a cold sore is coming on, dab a bit of thick moisturizer, like Aquaphor, over it to prevent it from getting worse.

15. Freeze Your Eyeliner
If the tip of your eyeliner pencil crumbles and smears on your lids, store the liner in the freezer for 15 minutes before use so the tip is firm and goes across your skin smoothly.

16. Use Toothpaste on a Zit
Use just a pea-size amount. Let sit for 15 minutes to absorb the oil so the pimple won't get more clogged, then wash off.

17. Heat Up Your Curler
If you have stick-straight lashes, try blasting your metal eyelash curler with a hair dryer for a couple seconds to heat it up so your lashes bend more easily. And use a waterproof mascara. The formula dries faster than other mascaras, so it sets the curl more effectively.

18. Use Soap Without Water
You know those fancy bars that are actually too pretty to use? Toss them in your underwear or tee-shirt drawers to make your skin smell delicious.

19. Groom Brows with a Toothbrush
Mist an (unused!) toothbrush or eyebrow comb with hair spray to help flatten and tame unruly brows.

20. Put Diaper-Rash Cream on Dry Spots
Slather on a thick layer of diaper-rash cream to heal cracked elbows and feet.

21. Lubricate Your Lashes
An easy way to draw attention to your eyes without putting on a pile of makeup is to comb petroleum jelly lightly through the tips of eyelashes to get a sexy, subtle sparkle.

22. Spike Lotion with Bronzer
If you don't have time to book a self-tanning session, mix a few pumps of body bronzer with regular hand lotion and pat it on your legs for a gradual dose of sexy, beachy color.

23. Air-Dry Your Curls
Let your hair dry indoors before going out in the cold. The curls will be really bouncy and piecey-perfect.

24. Press a Tea Bag on Splotches
If your skin is sensitive or just looking irritated and puffy for some reason, steep a bag of green tea for a minute or two, let it cool down, and dab it over your face. The antioxidants in the tea take down inflammation.

25. Shave with Conditioner
Ran out of shaving cream? Do double duty by coating your stems with a thick hair conditioner. It softens the hair so it's easier to shave off and makes legs feel amazingly silky.

26. Amp Shine with Vinegar
Mix one part vinegar with four parts carbonated water, and soak dry hair. Leave on for 15 minutes before you shampoo to lock in shine and combat dullness.

27. Exfoliate Your Pits
If your underarms start to look dry and flaky, an easy trick is to exfoliate them with a gentle face scrub to keep that skin pretty when going sleeveless.

28. Customize Your Body Lotion
Instead of shelling out for an expensive perfumed body product, you can make your own by pouring a few drops of fragrance into any scent-free lotion. Rub it on-the scent will last for hours.

29. "Brush" with Mouthwash
If you're too wiped out after a late night of partying to clean your teeth, rinse with water and mouthwash, then use a dry toothbrush on the area where your teeth hit your gums.

30. Make an Egg-White Mask
To revive tired, dull skin without hitting the spa table, try this: Crack open an egg in a bowl, separate the yolk, and use the egg whites to make a face mask. The proteins help to heal and restore skin's moisture. Leave it on for five minutes, and rinse off

Fergie unworried by threat of cash-rich City

Sir Alex Ferguson has repeated his warning to big-spending and big-talking Manchester City: "It takes more than money to build a successful team."

Just three days after crushing Portsmouth 6-0 in the Premier League, City were dumped out of the Carling Cup by League One Brighton.

And Manchester United boss Ferguson had a warning for his big-spending rivals saying: "It's all very well having all the money but you can't buy everyone. It was proved in the summer.

"We didn't want to sell Ronaldo, other clubs don't want to sell their best players, and there are only so many players you can buy."

The Old Trafford boss told the club's official magazine, Inside United: "Back in the 1950's Sunderland were called 'The Bank of England Team' - and they got relegated. There are no guarantees.

"You can buy 11 individuals - you can buy 11 Robinhos but it wouldn't be a team would it?

"The art of management is building a team with balance, with certain characteristics that blend with each other - that's the most important thing."

City manager Mark Hughes, who played under Ferguson at Old Trafford, has been promised time to achieve success by City's hugely wealthy new owners from Abu Dhabi but Ferguson remains sceptical about his former charge's chances of survival.

But Ferguson added: "Mark Hughes will be faced with that situation having all this money and wondering what to do with it, and that can put you under a bit of additional pressure."

Man Utd 3 - 1 Middlesbrough

It was almost as if Cristiano Ronaldo had never been away as he marked his return to Manchester United's starting line-up with a goal as they beat Middlesbrough 3-1 in the Carling Cup third round.

FEATURING NEWS

Chimps Prefer Cooked Food

When early humans mastered the use of fire, their immediate rewards were warmth, light, and protection from nocturnal predators.

Investigators have assumed that our ancestors also quickly realized the advantages of flame-cooked food — easy chewing and digestion — though clear evidence has been hard to find. A new study bolsters that idea, showing that we share our fondness for cooked grub with our wild cousins, the great apes.

Victoria Wobber and her graduate advisor at Harvard University, Richard Wrangham, along with a third colleague, gave a choice between cooked and raw food to a number of captive apes.

Chimpanzees clearly preferred cooked carrots, sweet potatoes, and beef over the raw alternatives. They did not express any preference in the case of white potatoes and apples — perhaps, the scientists say, because both remain relatively unchanged by cooking. A few bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans were also tested, and except for a penchant for cooked beef, not many expressed a preference, but those that did agreed with the chimps.

The findings concur with research showing that cats favor cooked meat and rats opt for cooked starch.

If animals with no regular access to cooked food nevertheless prefer it, it is plausible that our ancestors would have readily roasted their own victuals once they got the chance — a fine story to tell your guests around the barbecue this evening.

United bus attacked as it leaves Bridge

Manchester United's team bus was attacked as it left Stamford Bridge.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side were making their way to Euston for their return journey to the north-west after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea when a bottle was hurled at the windscreen.

No-one was injured, although the windscreen was cracked.

Nevertheless, the team continued on their short trip across London without further incident.

United officials were eager to play down the incident afterwards.

"Yes. There was an incident but the matter is now in the hands of the police,'' said a club spokesman.

Last time United visited the stadium Patrice Evra became involved in a heated post-match exchange with Chelsea groundsman Sam Bethell which is still the subject of an FA investigation while Rio Ferdinand was forced to apologise to a female steward after kicking a ball at her in anger.

Today's encounter was not much less contentious, with United picking up seven yellow cards from referee Mike Riley which will now see them fined by the FA.

A Chelsea statement tonight read: "We are aware of reports of an altercation with the Manchester United bus as it left the Stamford Bridge area.

"It appears to be an isolated incident but we have launched a full investigation in conjunction with local authorities.

"We do not condone violence in any shape or form. If, as a result of our investigations, we find that any Chelsea supporters were involved we will take appropriate action against those individuals.''

Report: Chelsea 1 United 1

United clinched a valuable point at Stamford Bridge but, having taken the lead through Ji-sung Park, could have snatched all three points were it not for slack marking from a Chelsea free-kick, with Salomon Kalou snatching a late leveller.

The match followed a similar pattern to United’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in that the Reds took the lead before the home side became the more dominant force. However, this was an infinitely better performance than the one at Anfield. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have not yet reached top form, but with players gradually returning from injury and suspension, this must seen this as a point gained and the team can kick on from here.

Sir Alex chose not to use Cristiano Ronaldo from the start, he instead settled for a place on the bench, as did Carlos Tevez, who stepped aside for Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney to occupy United’s forward roles. Owen Hargreaves and Park started out wide, while Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes took on central midfield duties. There was also a huge gesture of faith in the burgeoning ability of Jonny Evans, who deputised brilliantly for the suspended Nemanja Vidic alongside Rio Ferdinand.

It’s been a smooth-running start to the season for Chelsea, but Luiz Felipe Scolari had the disruption of injury to Deco during the warm-up, and later Ricardo Carvalho during the game's early stages. Michael Ballack, who scored twice against United at Stamford Bridge in April, replaced Deco.

'Tevez has no interest in move to City'

Carlos Tevez's advisor Kia Joorabchian has rejected tabloid talk of the Argentina star signing for Manchester City.

Tevez's two-year loan deal with Manchester United is due to end next spring, with the Old Trafford club keen to complete a permanent contract.

Earlier this week the 24-year-old admitted he would sign a United offer as soon as it was put before him.

However, reports have emerged claiming cash-rich City are eager to poach the South American.

However, Joorabchian is adamant Tevez, who was left on the bench for today's clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, has no desire to join City and will eventually sign for United as planned.

"Carlos is not joining Manchester City," said Joorabchian, who is no longer the head of MSI, having left the company to take charge of a loose grouping of like-minded businessmen.

"All this talk linking him with them is a complete load of nonsense.

"He is a Manchester United player through and through and is looking forward to signing a long-term contract with them in the near future."

City tried to trump United on deadline day as they closed in on Dimitar Berbatov and have even been linked with a £135m deal for Cristiano Ronaldo, a suggestion derided by both Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill.
